About PHILLIPS-KNAPP Family Association
The PHILLIPS-KNAPP Family Association was organized in 2005. Although
suggested first year contributions were only a dollar a person, that initial
year turned out to be a very productive one. Many of our members gave
generously of their time and dug into their own pockets to cover expenses they
incurred. To all of these people we will be eternally grateful for organizing
our family group.
In its first year of existence, the PHILLIPS-KNAPP Family Association led the
effort to restore and rededicate the PHILLIPS-KNAPP Cemetery on Birch Drive in
Thiells, Rockland County, New York. The SAR, DAR, Veterans Association, and
Town officials all took part in the deeply moving rededication ceremony which
ended the reunion weekend.
As we began our second year, our goal in addition to continued community
service and care of the resting places of our ancestors was to locate more of
our family members. To support our activities we were forced to raise our
dues to $5 per person. The dues may either be sent to Vicki Miller at 65
Rosman Road, Thiells, New York, or brought to the first day of the reunion.
If paying by check, please make payable to either Vicki or to Cash.
Some of our members are descendants of the three sons of John PHILLIPS & Sarah
KNAPP, namely Eli PHILLIPS, Gilbert PHILLIPS and Daniel PHILLIPS. Most of
those persons identified to date are descendants of Daniel PHILLIPS. The
PHILLIPSES who stayed in Rockland County and the surrounding area primarily
are descendants of Daniel Phillips.
Others of our members are descendants of four KNAPP brothers, Lebbeus, Jared,
Jonah or Jonas, and Silas. Like the PHILLIPSES, they are believed to have come
to Rockland County from Horsenecks (Greenwich) Connecticut, A quick look at
the family tree will show you that the PHILLIPS and KNAPP families
intermarried repeatedly. If you are a PHILLIPS descendant, most likely you
are also KNAPP descendant, and vice versa.
We ended our second reunion by dedicating the Flag Pole at the Phillips Knapp
Cemetery, and by honoring Bob Phillips. Bob has kindly shared with us many of
his original documents about our ancestors. These documents include deeds,
letters, and various other things. It is with great sadness that we report the death
of Bob Phillips during the past year. We are greatful he was able to attend our
first three reunions and that we honored him during his lifetime.
Our third reunion focused on the occupations of many our ancestors; namely the
rivermen, the brickmakers, and the solders and militiamen. The highlight of the
weekend was a boat trip down the Hudson from West Point to the Bear Mountain Bridge,
followed by a History Channel movie featuring the Haverstraw Brick works where many
of our ancestors worked. A representative of the brick museum was there to tell us
more about the industry and answer our questions.
We are now planning our fourth reunion. It will be held the third weekend in
September, our set meeting time. This year the weekend falls on the 2oth and 21st.

The original purpose of building this family tree was to bring each line down
as close as possible to the current date, and thus be able to locate other
potential members of our association. While visiting this site, check out our
names and see if any match your ancestors. Also check for your surname, or that
of your parents and grandparents. Remember, the female lines change the
surname in each generation! We have now upgraded to a deluxe site, so even more
information should be available about those ancestors for whom we have such
information.
If you have additions and/or corrections, any pictures to add, or any other
comments, please contact me at my e-mail address above. We are looking to grow
a vibrant membership with representatives throughout the country and even the
world. You can also contact me for more specific sources for the names entered
on this web site. Happy searching! And if you are a Phillips-Knapp
descendant, send me an e-mail to get on our mailing list.
Happy Hunting, and we hope you enjoy our site! More research has been done over the
winter which will soon be added to the site.
